Possible Honeymoon Location

While doing research for locations for our honeymoon my future wife came across this gem in Turkey. Thanks for the thought babe, but I think it may be a little much, even for me.

Operation Ivy

"Back in school did you ever get busted for trying to walk & have some administrator tell you 'Son, you can stroke your obligations and try to be different from your peers, but responsibilty and your future...is gonna find you!"

What does a punk rock quote from a band from the 80's have to do with growing mushrooms and my life? Right now everything...

My friend, Joey (cavotu.com) has been making some killer apparel in San Pedro since 2005, and he has been backing Shiitake Happens since day one. Check out the website for the 411.

Don't Quit Your Day Job

Long before I started Shiitake Happens, I was a fresh college graduate (Go Otters!) working as a starving photographer in the surfing industry. Majority of my time was spent traveling and shooting photos of the best surfers in the world. I was definitely living the dream.

I recently received a call from my good friend, Ruby, asking me to dust off the old camera and shoot photos of the Spyder Surf Fest 2. I couldn't say no to my old passion plus it sounded like it was going to be quite an event.
Surfline.com wrote a nice article on the event and posted my pictures here. Thanks again for the good times, Ruby. Ok now back to reality of being a starving mushroom farmer.

Slow'n Low, That is the Tempo

Like the Beastie Boy's say "Slow and Low", is how proper BBQ is done.

Nobody knows this better than our newest account in Seal Beach,  Beachwood BBQ.

Gabe slangs' the best BBQ in town, accompanied by bitchin sides and incredible beer to boot, it is a must stop when you are in Seal Beach.

Blue Oyster Cult

Shiitake Happens has it's first trial run of Blue Oyster Mushrooms, also called hiratake or shimeji. It 's a small satiny, silvery blue-capped mushroom with a white stem. It is a solid flavourful oyster strain, that generally tastes sweetly shrimp-like. They hold their shape and springiness when briefly cooked. They will be available in the next few weeks.

"More cowbell!"

When Fungus Ruled the World

My friend sent me this article from Wired magazine, it's about 20 foot fungus called Prototaxites that once upon a time ruled Earth. Crazy!

Thanks Felony Ron for the link.

The Med

I dropped off some freshly picked white oyster mushrooms to Mediterraneo on Wednesday and before I could get out the door John sent a few plates of food my way. The three dishes he knocked out blew my socks off, boy oh boy can that kid cook. Amber and Johnny handle some top notch cuisine, so swing on by ask ask about their mushroom specials.

Righthand Man

Shiitake Happens has our first employee, Joe. With Joe around production at the farm has doubled, I'm up on all theories about 2012, and without him Shiitake Happens would be lost. Joe, the next Tecate is on me.
